Made-to-Measure Gates
Side gates, driveway gates and entrance gates, built to the opening you actually have rather than the nearest standard size.
Almost no gateway is a standard size. Posts lean, brick piers are rarely square, and ground levels fall away across the opening. That is why every gate we supply is made to measure, and why we take the measurements ourselves rather than asking you to.
Every gate comes with hinges, latch and lock bolts included as standard. There is no separate ironmongery line that turns up on the invoice afterwards.
What we build
Side and pedestrian gates
The gate down the side of the house, usually matched to the fence it sits in so the boundary reads as one thing rather than two. Built to any height, including a full 6ft where security is the point.
Driveway gates
Single or double leaf, framed, ledged and braced for strength. Flat topped, arched or dipped, depending on the property and how much you want the gate to be noticed.
Entrance and estate gates
Wider openings and heavier sections, hung on posts set deep enough to carry that weight without the gate dropping a year later.
Bin and store gates
Smaller enclosures for bins, meters and log stores. Unglamorous, constantly requested, and worth building properly so the doors still shut in five years.
Hanging matters more than the gate
A well made gate hung badly will bind, drop and eventually stop latching altogether. Two things decide whether that happens: the posts and the hardware.
For a heavy driveway gate we set substantial posts in concrete, sized to the leaf they are carrying, and we allow for the ground falling across the opening so the gate does not catch halfway through its swing. Where a gate hangs off brick piers we fix into the pier properly rather than trusting plugs that will work loose.
Hardware gets chosen to match the weight. Band and gudgeon hinges for anything substantial, and lock bolts that drop into the ground rather than sitting proud of it waiting to be kicked.
Matching a gate to your fencing
Most people want a gate to disappear into the run rather than announce itself. We build in the same timber and the same profile as the fence, whether that is close board, continental board or trellis topped, so the boundary reads as a single line. If you are having new fencing at the same time, this is by far the easiest moment to do it.
Where a new gate has to sit alongside an existing fence we match the timber as closely as it can be matched, and we are straight with you about weathering. New timber beside ten year old timber will not look identical for the first couple of seasons. It gets there.
Automation and access
We build gates that are ready to be automated where that is the plan, which mostly means getting posts, clearances and ground levels right at the point of installation. Retro-fitting automation to a gate that was never set up for it is where the cost lands, so it is worth mentioning at the quote stage even if it is a someday idea.
Repairs to existing gates
Not every gate needs replacing. Dropped hinges, failed latches and rotten bottom rails are all fixable, and we would far rather repair a sound gate than sell you a new one. That work sits with our repairs service.
Talk to us about a gate
We will measure the opening, talk through the design and quote in writing. Call 0118 989 0564 or send a photo of the gateway to get started.
