Fencing in Reading

We cover the eastern side of Reading and the surrounding suburbs, both domestic and commercial. It is the furthest regular work from our yard and comfortably the most complicated to physically get done.

We are based at Valley Crescent in Wokingham, about 6.1 miles from Reading, and we have been fencing across this part of Berkshire since 1992. Reading falls under Reading Borough Council for planning purposes.

Reading has its own council

Worth saying up front, because it trips people up. Reading is a unitary authority: Reading Borough Council, separate from Wokingham Borough and from Bracknell Forest. Its local planning policies and conservation area boundaries are its own.

The permitted development baseline does not change, and it is explained on our fence height guide. What changes is everything layered on top, and Reading has a substantial number of conservation areas across the older parts of town.

Terraced properties and the rear alley

A large amount of Reading housing is Victorian and Edwardian terracing, where the back garden is reached either through the house or via a shared rear alley. Both are constraints on a fencing job and both need thinking about before the day.

Through the house means dust sheets and short lengths. The rear alley means checking it is actually passable, that it is not blocked by someone's bins or extension, and occasionally that we have permission to use it at all. We look at the route on the site visit and price the job accordingly.

Parking, loading and the practical stuff

Unglamorous and genuinely important. On a terraced street with permit parking and no driveway there may be nowhere to leave a vehicle loaded with timber for a day. That affects how we schedule the job and sometimes how long it takes.

Tell us at the quote stage if your street is permit-only or particularly tight. It is far better dealt with in advance than discovered at eight in the morning with a van full of fence panels.
