Fencing in Twyford

Twyford is a village that grew, which means the housing stock is genuinely mixed and almost nothing about a boundary here is standard. We have worked in the village for decades and the jobs still surprise us.

We are based at Valley Crescent in Wokingham, about 5.1 miles from Twyford, and we have been fencing across this part of Berkshire since 1992. Twyford falls under Wokingham Borough Council for planning purposes.

Old boundaries are rarely square

On a modern estate the boundary was set out by a developer with a tape measure. In older parts of Twyford the line follows something historic: a former field edge, a hedge that was there first, or a wall someone built in the 1930s. Panels do not drop neatly into lines like that.

Wet ground near the Loddon

Twyford sits close to the River Loddon and parts of the village hold water badly. Wet ground is the shortest route to a failed fence, because timber posts rot from the section you cannot see, at and just below the soil line.

Where we are fencing on ground that stays damp we push hard for concrete posts or DURAPOST galvanised steel rather than timber. It costs more on the day and it is materially cheaper over ten years. If you already have a timber fence leaning in wet ground, a concrete spur will usually save it.

Access, and why we ask about it

Village properties frequently have no side access, a narrow side return, or a shared drive. That matters more than people expect, because it decides whether materials come through the house, round the block, or over a neighbour's ground with their permission.

It is the first thing we look at on a site visit and it is a real component of the quote. Nobody enjoys discovering on the morning of the job that six metre lengths will not go round a corner.

Planning and the conservation area

Twyford is covered by Wokingham Borough Council. Standard permitted development rules apply, but the village has conservation designations and a number of older buildings where extra restrictions bite, particularly on anything facing a road.
